Todd County residents contributed to a significant community effort on Wednesday as WEKT hosted its second annual food drive to support the Todd County Public Schools Family Resource and Youth Service Centers.

The community-wide food drive to support students in need this summer saw a significant boost in contributions on Wednesday, according to North Todd FRYSC Coordinator Emily Smith. She reported receiving $2,440 in monetary donations, along with $150 in Food Giant gift cards.

These latest contributions bring the total monetary donations to $5,250 so far.

Additionally, more than $1,000 in food items were collected on Wednesday at the Elkton Food Giant.

The food donations will be distributed during the summer at events hosted by the Todd County School District cafeteria programs.

Distributions are scheduled for every Monday from June 1st to July 20th, between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., at Lizzy Dancy Park in Guthrie and at parks in Elkton, Sharon Grove, and Clifty. The initial distribution will occur on Tuesday, May 26th, because of the Memorial Day holiday. At these events, the cafeterias will provide families in need with five breakfast and five lunch meals.

Smith said they plan to distribute dinner and snack options to supplement what the cafeteria programs are unable to provide this summer. The program helped several families last summer.

With the school year ending Friday, district officials hope to receive donations by that time, though Smith said contributions may be made at any time.

Smith can be reached by calling (270) 403-5436.
