In a nod to the city’s heritage, Elkton City Police unveiled a new uniform patch at Tuesday’s special called city council meeting.
The patch featuring a blue background, yellow lettering, and a depiction of the Elkton elk on the northeast side of the historic Todd County courthouse was designed by city officers and will be worn on both sleeves of officer uniforms.
Elkton Police Chief Robert Toombs told the council that the department continues to respond to numerous complaints about speeding.
The department now has a speed radar trailer that will be set up on rotating streets within the city.
Chief Toombs advised he plans to continue to study speed limits on side streets and may recommend lower speed limits or the construction of speed humps.
In other news, city council members approved the second reading of an ordinance rezoning 1.49 acres of land on South Main Street that will soon be the site of the city’s newest retail store. Construction of the Dollar General Mini Market is underway at the site.
The council also approved a recommendation from the Elkton Planning Commission and the first reading of an ordinance that calls for the rezoning of 8.71 acres on the north side of Highway 68/80 from single-family residential and highway commercial district to multifamily residential. The land is currently owned by John Laster and is the site of Laster Mobile Home Park.
A second reading of the ordinance will be held at the September city council meeting.
The council approved resolutions appointing Justin Griffin as citation officer and zoning administrator and reappointing Jean Odum to the Planning Commission and Elkton Code Enforcement Board.
