Russellville, Kentucky will hold a community dedication and blessing of their new Safe Haven Baby Box located at the Russellville Fire Department.
Safe Haven Baby Boxes offer a safe, secure option for mothers in crisis who are unable to care for their newborns. The Safe Haven Box allows mothers to legally surrender their infant so that they may be placed in foster care.
Once the child is placed in the temperature-controlled, padded bassinet that is the Safe Haven Box, the exterior door is locked and an immediate signal is sent to dispatch who then retrieves the baby and transports them to a hospital for evaluation.
There are currently 370 Safe Haven Baby Boxes in the United States, including 56 in Kentucky alone, with Florence, Kentucky being the most recent addition at the end of last month. Hopkinsville also installed a box at its fire department just last year.
Russellville’s dedication will be held Tuesday, Aug. 26 at 1 p.m. at the fire department, located at 620 North Main Street.
