Todd County Rescue Squad Hosting Donkey Basketball

Later this month, Todd County Central High School will be the location of a special basketball game – played by donkeys.

The Todd County Rescue Squad will host Donkey Basketball Saturday Sept, 28 at the high school. After HarvestFest wraps up in the afternoon, the community is invited to watch the squad team up with donkeys to play a rousing basketball game Saturday evening.

Donkey Basketball isn’t just a name – the sport involves real, live donkeys, says rescue squad secretary Brandi Hembree. During the game, she explains rescue squad members will ride on the backs of donkeys and try to score a basket.

Donkeys will be herded into Elkton from Circle (A) Donkey Ball Company in Henry, Tennessee, a business specializing in donkey sports such as basketball, softball, polo and donkey races.

Advance tickets cost $10 from now until day-of, with $12 tickets at the door. Concessions will also be available. Hembree says all proceeds from the event will go toward the rescue squad for building upgrades and purchasing of new equipment, potentially including a brand-new rescue truck to better serve the community. Hembree says there are a couple different purchases the squad has discussed in the past year, and the final decision is still up in the air.

She adds everything the squad does goes back into the community so that they can better serve their citizens and the people passing through.

Hembree notes the squad will also have a booth at HarvestFest Saturday afternoon, complete with an inflatable donkey, to sell tickets and promote the event.

Doors open at 5 p.m. and the game will begin at 6 p.m.

Contact any rescue squad member for tickets or call 931-291-3546.
