A woman was charged Wednesday with theft after she reportedly took items from an Elkton man’s home after he was deceased.

Elkton Police Captain Jakop Smith says on January 29th they were called by a caregiver to Harvest Moon Apartments for a man who had died of natural causes.

On February 11th family members reportedly contacted Smith about items that were missing from the apartment and through the investigation it was found that his caregiver 67-year-old Maggie Bellamy-Beard had taken the man’s wallet after he died.

She was cited to court Wednesday on charges of theft by unlawful taking and tampering with physical evidence. Smith says the investigation is still ongoing and more charges are pending.

Smith was assisted by Officer Stayce Player and Todd County Deputy Coroner Mike Tino-Cunniffe.
