The City of Trenton celebrates the 95th birthday of one of its oldest residents on Tuesday.
City commissioners voted Monday evening to proclaim April 9, 2024, as Douglas Ray Hyams Day.
Hyams was born April 9, 1929, in Trenton and has lived his entire life in the city. He has served in various capacities during his lifetime including owner of Hyams Standard Station and Hyams Repair Shop, chief of the Trenton Volunteer Fire Department, a member of the Trenton Masonic Lodge, board member of United Southern Bank, and a member of the Trenton Methodist Church.
According to Trenton Mayor Martha Jo Ray, Hyams remains very active.
Hyams and his wife Elizabeth have a daughter, two grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
In other news, commissioners put their stamp of approval on a water service territory agreement with the Todd County Water District. The agreement includes approximately 5700 acres both inside and outside the city limits of Trenton where city water lines and service already exist.
The agreement will allow the entities to swap customers and service lines in the future, should it be needed, based on defined parcels.
The commission also voted to approve the purchase of $180 of synthetic methamphetamine to continue local narcotics training for K-9 Boone. Boone and Trenton Police Chief Henry Hamlet recently completed a nearly month-long narcotics training program through Canine Command in Hendersonville, TN.
Trenton spring clean-up days are scheduled for April 22 and 23 and the city’s annual Memorial Day Service is scheduled for May 26 at 2 p.m.
