Todd County Central High School Alumni Spotlight: Stephen Rutherford

Stephen Vincent Rutherford is a 1966 graduate of Todd County Central High School.

He values most from his time in high school the way it helped prepare him for his life in Todd County and beyond. He made lifelong friends at Todd Central and remembers the camaraderie among students coming together from all parts of the county. Rutherford says he learned from a great group of dedicated educators who have made a lasting memory: Principal Bush, several great teachers including Miss White, Mrs. Coursey, Mr. Harold Ross, Mrs. Tilley, Mrs. Virginia Thompson, Mr. Billy West and Mr. Billy Phillips, all who were excellent.

He adds he will always treasure the memory of the first day the school was integrated, as it was historical, needed and a journey reached.

Rutherford advises current Todd Central students to take it all in, enjoy, and learn, but don’t rush it.

To current educators, he says to listen, be honest, and make it interesting.

After graduating, he attended Austin Peay State University and Western Kentucky University with majors in history and political science. He also holds a master’s degree in education. Rutherford’s professional experiences in education and government have been most significant to him.

Rutherford was born in Davenport, Iowa and currently lives in Old Hickory, Tennessee.
