The Todd County Extension Office will host a session with the University of Kentucky’s Fencing School Thursday April 30.
The all-day session is part of the university’s Forage Extension Program, where Ag Agent Traci Johnson says farmers in the area will have the opportunity to learn about the many different types of fences that can be implemented on farms.
UK rotates locations for the fencing school across the state, and Johnson says it’s really special to be able to host in Todd County. The session will include indoor learning and lunch at the Extension Office during the first part of the day, then participants will move out to a local farm for hands-on fencing work designed for all levels, where Johnson says even experienced farmers can pick up new tricks and techniques.
She notes an important skill participants will learn is brace construction.
Johnson adds they will also touch base on new technology, like wireless fences and Kentucky fence law, and participants will have the opportunity to build a fence in the afternoon session.
She hopes everyone who attends will try at least one thing out at the farm. Those interested can sign up online by searching “Kentucky forage” or by stopping by the Extension Office. The cost to attend is $35 for the day, including lunch and take-home info. The session will run from 7:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.
