James Hightower Honored by Elkton Police

After sixty years, a fallen Elkton Police Officer and World War II veteran is being honored for his service.

Elkton Police Chief Robert Toombs says it all started because of the recruits they send to training.

Toombs and Captain Jakop Smith say they enlisted the help of Todd County Historian Gary Violette.

That is when they learned about Officer James Coleman Hightower.

Smith says it was during Hightower’s 15th year of service to the city that he fell in the line of duty.

Hightower was a retired master sergeant in the US Army, having served for 27 years and retired in 1945. He farmed until 1952, when he joined the Elkton Police Department.

Hightower’s daughter, Carol Smith of Clarksville, says he loved his community.

Many of Hightower’s children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were on hand for last week’s plaque presentation. Toombs says the plaque will be on display in the police department’s lobby.
