Todd County Extension Talks Emergency Preparedness

Whether storm, flood, or extended power outage, planning ahead during a natural disaster can make a big difference for families.

Jill Harris, Family and Consumer Science Agent with the Todd County Extension Office, says it’s incredibly important to be prepared ahead of time. She recommends having at least a three day supply of non-perishable food items that do not require refrigeration, cooking or even adding water.

For water, Harris says to plan for at least one gallon of water per person per day, which would cover drinking and basic sanitation.

Harris says to be sure to include food for infants, older adults or anyone with special dietary needs or allergies. To reduce stress during a difficult time, she adds it can be helpful to have familiar items on hand, such as little treats like candy.

Besides food and water, Harris says it’s also important to have a family emergency plan.
