The Todd County Laity and Ministers Alliance (LAMA) invites the community to come together for a parade and service honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. Sunday, Jan. 18.
LAMA Treasurer Dana Orr shares the day begins with a march from Elkton City Park to Todd County Central High School. The march begins at 2:30 p.m., so she asks participants to arrive at the park at 2:15 p.m. if they plan to march.
This is also when individuals and organizations should arrive with their banners. This year’s banner theme is “Fostering Peace and Unity in the Community.” Typically, Orr says Todd County’s schools and local churches will make banners, but any individual is open to participate as well.
A program at the high school’s auditorium will begin at 3 p.m. after the march reaches the school, with guest speaker Reverend Lisa Balboa and live music by Ben Lewis and Amanda Sweeney Brunt.
Orr says the program collaborates with the Todd County School District to get students involved – throughout the week, younger elementary-aged students will create an art project, and fourth grade through high school students will write essays about Dr. King’s legacy.
Winners from all grades will be recognized at the program.
First place winners of the essay contest will also have the opportunity to read their essays aloud.
During the program, LAMA will also take up an offering for their Disaster Relief Fund, which Orr says helps Todd Countians with emergency assistance, supplies and relief resources during tragedy or unexpected crises.
In case of inclement weather, the program will still go on. Participants are invited to drive their cars along the same march route in a motorcade, led by police.
This year’s national theme for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is “Mentoring the Dream.” Todd County LAMA invites the community to honor Dr. King by continuing his work together.
