Recovery efforts at the train derailment site near U.S. 41 have reached a major milestone, with all derailed cars now consolidated into a single area to streamline cleanup. Todd County EM Ash Groves said officials are currently aiming to reopen U.S. 41 by the end of the day Friday, pending final safety assessments.

With local landfills closed on Thursday, crews will spend the day focusing on site consolidation and staging loaded debris trucks so they can move out the moment facilities reopen Friday morning. While non-hazardous cleanup is well underway, specialized timelines remain for several liquid commodities. Seven cars of molten sulfur must stay on-site to cool and harden before removal, while cars containing industrial liquor and rapeseed oil are scheduled for transfer at separate facilities in the coming days.

Groves added that public safety remains the top priority, and continuous air monitoring has identified no hazardous detections in the area. Residents should expect increased rail traffic and slower train speeds as CSX works to clear the congestion caused by the initial incident.
