Todd County Emergency Management Director Ash Groves shared Tuesday night that cleanup and recovery operations at the CSX train derailment site near Trenton are progressing ahead of schedule.

“CSX has heavy equipment on-site and is actively removing debris,” said Groves. “While cleanup efforts are advancing well and we anticipate an accelerated restoration timeline, public safety requires that U.S. 41 remain closed through the end of the week to accommodate the transport of damaged materials.”

Groves noted that the next phase of the operation involves the specialized offloading of railcars containing molten sulfur. Once stabilized, these cars will be moved to a salvage location via local roads. This process will be closely coordinated with state and local authorities to provide necessary escorts and ensure safe passage.

“Public safety remains our top priority,” Groves stated. “We urge motorists to continue using designated alternate routes while these critical operations are underway.”
