Approaching its 100th anniversary in two years, Elkton’s historic Milliken Memorial Community House is preparing for a massive renovation.
Board member Brittany Prather announced that $5 million was approved by the Kentucky General Assembly earlier this year for extensive renovations to the nearly 13,000-square-foot building.
While specific details await the hiring of an architect, a process currently underway, the overarching vision focuses on restoring the structure and updating it for modern usage. General projects include updating wiring and plumbing, restoring windows, brick tucking to prevent leaks, roof maintenance, and upgrading heating and cooling for efficient airflow. Plans also call for adding more restrooms and installing an elevator, all while respecting the building’s historic footprint and integrity.
Although the massive project is daunting, Prather emphasized that the century-old landmark remains in remarkable shape. “She was built well and has good bones,” Prather said. With more specifics to come, the board is eager to guide the historic landmark into its next chapter.
“This board is very excited and very aware of the importance of the role we play in being respectful and responsible in the restoration of our grand old lady,” Prather stated.
