People thinking about starting home fruit gardens for the new year should consider starting with berries, says Todd County Agriculture and Natural Resources Extension Agent Traci Johnson.
Before planting any type of fruit trees or berries, Johnson says it’s important to test the soil’s pH. Berries are typically sensitive to different types of soil, and she recommends using a low soil pH – or an acidic soil – as it’s ideal for the berries to survive and bear fruit.
Johnson notes many people have developed an interest in growing fruit from home recently, and she’s glad to help anyone at any skill level.
