Twelve-year old Ellery Jenkins hopes to contribute to cancer research through beekeeping.
The Todd County Middle School student is currently a pre-quarterfinalist in the Ranger Rick Junior Ranger competition, a national voting competition which promises a $20,000 check to its winner.
Ranger Rick, a children’s nature magazine published by the National Wildlife Federation, helps children of all ages discover and connect with nature so that they, too, become good stewards of the environment. Being a good steward is something Jenkins is already very familiar with through her passion for animal conservation and two-years experience in beekeeping at her farm.
With the award money, Jenkins says she hopes to expand her beekeeping endeavors and her research with bees. Not just any research – Jenkins’ specialty is the fight against cancer.
After her mother’s breast cancer diagnosis, Jenkins’ research began. She discovered there are natural enzymes that fight the disease and she wants to find a way to infuse those cancer-fighting enzymes into her honey – all while saving the bees.
The winning Junior Ranger will also get the opportunity to be featured in the Ranger Rick magazine, and the opportunity to learn with wildlife conservationist and television personality Jeff Corwin, known for his wildlife shows aired on Disney Channel, Animal Planet and ABC.
The winner is decided through public, online voting. Currently, Jenkins is ranked first place in her group. If she remains in first place by the time voting closes at 9 p.m. on Thursday, June 26, Jenkins will move on to quarterfinals. From there, there will be three more weeks of final voting rounds until a winner is decided.
Individuals can submit one vote every 24 hours. Vote for Jenkins HERE.
