Elkton Rotary To Supply New Shoes For Students Through Annual 5K

Walkers, runners and teams are invited to sign up for Elkton Rotary’s annual Firecracker 5K Saturday, June 28 to raise money for Todd County students.

All money raised from the annual race directly benefits the school district’s Family Resource and Youth Service Center (FRYSC) and their special program, Happy Feet, which supplies students with brand-new pairs of shoes to start their school year.

Tiffany Groves with the Rotary Club says registration only recently opened and 22 individuals have already signed up. She adds last year saw 108 participants and she would love to have even more people involved this year.

Last year, Todd County’s school district was able to supply 128 students with new shoes. Groves’ goal for this year’s 5K is 200 pairs of shoes, which would require raising $6,000. She notes every $30 entry fee provides one pair of shoes for a student.

In addition to race participants, Groves says the Rotary Club is also accepting sponsorships for $250.

For those unable to participate and want to help another way, the club is also seeking volunteers and monetary donations, which can be made to Happy Feet through the registration website.

Groves says the race route will take participants all over Elkton, beginning at the Milliken Memorial Community House.
