Todd County demonstrated its commitment to helping those in need by participating in WEKT’s food drive on Thursday.
Over $2,000 in food and monetary donations were collected at the Elkton and Guthrie Food Giant locations. The food drive was a collection drive for Todd County Schools FRYSC to help provide food for families in need over the summer break.
During Thursday’s broadcasts, Trenton resident Carrie Joy Brookshire was among the community members who donated. Brookshire shared her reason for giving and why there are many families in need.
North Todd Elementary Family Resource Coordinator Emily Buis shared that the district helped 44 families last summer, and the need continues to grow.
During the broadcast, Buis was presented with a $1,000 donation from the Back2Back Foundation.
Other monetary donations included $100 from the South Western Kentucky EDC and an anonymous $250 donation in honor of Mark and Noelle Thomas.
Mark, who has served as the district’s superintendent for the last five years, retires June 30th. During his time in the community, he learned quickly about its giving spirit.
Incoming Superintendent Jessica Addison is deeply connected to the county, having been raised in Todd County, and takes pride in the supportive community.
Looking to the future, the district will soon hand out the items collected to families in need. Buis added they plan to host a chance to ‘adopt a student’ to help purchase back-to-school clothing for the upcoming school year.
The FRYSC programs will also assist with the Elkton Rotary Club’s annual Firecracker 5K on Saturday morning, June 28, to benefit the Happy Feet Program, which purchases new shoes for students in need.
