Young Steve Haley, pedaling his Grit newspapers through Guthrie, already showed the drive that would define his 65 years. From selling eggs to a 45-year career in the grocery business, culminating as Salesman of the Year, he embraced hard work.
His dedication extended to Robertson County, where he served as a commissioner for years, and to his hometown, Guthrie, where he championed the Robert Penn Warren Birthplace. As a father, he was a constant presence, coaching and cheering his children. His passions ranged from local sports to community theater.
Faith was central to Steve’s life, evident in his decades of teaching Sunday School and his support for Christian organizations. Late in life, he found his voice as a writer, his “The Guthrie I Remember” column capturing the heart of small-town life, earning him accolades and reminding readers of the beauty in the everyday. Though his battle with cancer was brief, the stories he shared and the life he lived leave a lasting warmth.
