Elkton City Hall Renovation Nearly Complete

The Elkton City Council met for the first time Thursday evening in the newly renovated City Hall.

Renovations to the building include the addition of a porch and stonework on the exterior of the building, as well as new office spaces, floors, paint, and stonework on the interior.

Elkton Mayor Arthur Green told the council that work on the building is nearly complete and has been a team effort.

The council approved a conditional lease with Verizon to install 2 additional antennas on the city water tower. The lease, which will pay the city $150 per month for each antenna, is in addition to the city’s current lease with Verizon and is conditional upon approval by the contracted maintenance company.

Verizon currently pays the city $20,466 annually for the use of the water tower.

The council also approved the second reading of an ordinance that rezones 8.71 acres of land north of Highway 68/80 in Elkton to multi-family residential. The tract includes land at the intersection f Jordan Avenue and Mary Street and portions of land on Joiners Avenue, Lasters Avenue, Shelbys Avenue, and W. Ruth Street.

The city was recently awarded $42,201 in monies from the Urban and Community Forestry Assistance Grant.

The grant, administered by the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet, helps communities increase access to trees and green spaces.

Mayor Green told the council that $28,000 will be used by the city to plant new trees and replace lost trees.

The council approved the reappointment of Tammy Sharp to the Elkton Code Enforcement Board and the appointment of Justin Griffin to the Todd County City/County Planning Commission.
