Elkton’s Historic Public Square currently shines purple in honor of the Month of the Military Child.
Mayor Arthur Green says the month of April is the Month of the Military Child and the City of Elkton decided to change the color of the lights on the square in order to show support for the military and military children.
At the City Council meeting on April 11, Green says the council unanimously approved proclamations regarding the month of April. The council proclaimed April 15 to be “Purple Up! Day” in honor of military families and the entire month of April to be the Month of the Military Child, stating “military children undergo unique challenges, which they face with resilience and dignity beyond their years.”
Purple symbolizes all branches of the military, as it combines green for the Army, red for the Marines, and blue for the Coast Guard, Air Force, and Navy.
He adds the military is essential not only to the region and county but essential to the protection, safety, and freedoms in the country and the world.
The lights will remain purple throughout the remainder of the month. Green says the lights typically change colors for each month and have been a beautiful addition to the square, and adds he does not know what May’s color will be yet but would be glad to take recommendations.
