A group of Guthrie residents, armed with a petition with more than 50 signatures, were on hand at Tuesday’s city council meeting asking for the closure of Moore Street.
The group, led by property owner Terri Tilghman-Douglas expressed concern that the street had recently been surveyed and plans were underway to pour dirt and gravel on the remainder of the street that leads to the Covington family property—WITHOUT the knowledge or consent of the city council.
Moore Street, part of the Oak Hill Subdivision, has been a city street since 1966; however, in recent years, the city has not been maintaining the street.
City Attorney Jeff Traughber told the council and residents that according to state law, private citizens can pay for surveys to establish boundaries and that closing the street takes more than just the council’s approval.
In this case, Traughber advised that one of the 3 adjoining property owners would not consent to the closure of the street. In addition to Tilghman-Douglas, Lillian Norris and the Covington family are adjoining property owners.
Resident Jamison Covington believes that the actions of the his family to survey and its plans to gravel the street should be concerning to the city and the council.
The council took no action on the street closure.
