Guthrie Police Chief Dean Blumel told Guthrie city council members Tuesday evening that the police department will likely begin 24-hour coverage early next year after the department’s newest officer completes his field training officer program.

Officer Tyler Honeycutt graduated from the state’s criminal justice academy on October 5.

Blumel reports the department’s four officers will work rotating swing shifts that will allow around-the-clock coverage.

Officers made 170 arrests in October including several DUI arrests and have recovered 5 stolen vehicles.

Blumel urged residents and city council members to call the police department or Todd County Dispatch for concerns or assistance rather than posting on social media.

In other news, the council approved a motion appointing resident David England to the Joint City/County Planning Commission. England will join 4 others newly appointed to the commission to review and approve a comprehensive plan for the county and the encompassing cities.

The council also approved an ordinance changing the meeting time of the city’s Code Enforcement Board. The board will now meet at 5:30 p.m. on the 1st Tuesday of each month.

The city of Guthrie will host an open house on Friday, December 1, from 11-1 at the Guthrie Senior Citizen Center.

A full day of Christmas festivities has been scheduled for Saturday, December 2, in downtown Guthrie. The Christmas Parade will be at 11 am followed by a Santa Meet and Greet at noon. Residents are encouraged to participate in singing, making tree ornaments, and other games and activities throughout the afternoon. The city’s Christmas Tree lighting will be at 4:30.
